# Notifications and email

> Where Vein tells you something happened, and how to change what reaches your inbox.

Vein notifies you in two places: inside the product, and by email. The in-app
list is always complete. Email is a filtered subset of it, and you decide how
much of that subset you want.

## Where notifications appear

This differs by side of the product, which is the single most common reason
people think they are not being notified at all.

**If you are an investor**, there is a bell in the header of your Dashboard. It
carries an unread count and opens the full list.

**If you are a company**, there is no bell. Notifications appear as a panel on
your Dashboard, alongside your metrics. If you work mostly from the Reporting
page you will not see them until you go back to the Dashboard.

Either way you can mark a single item read, mark everything read, dismiss one, or
dismiss all. Dismissing removes it from the list; it does not undo whatever
prompted it.

## What reaches your inbox

Settings has a **Notifications** section with a master switch and, beneath it,
the individual emails. Turning the master switch off disables every one of them
at once; the individual toggles grey out rather than disappearing, so you can
see what you have suppressed.

The individual toggles differ by side, because the two sides are told about
different events.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Companies">
    | Email              | Default | Sent when                                               |
    | ------------------ | :-----: | ------------------------------------------------------- |
    | Report Requests | On | An investor requests a report from you |
    | Report Deadlines | On | A deadline is approaching, or a scheduled report is due |
    | Data Room Activity | **Off** | Someone opens one of your data rooms |

    Data Room Activity is the only one that starts switched off. Turn it on if
    you are sharing a room during a raise and want to know when it is being read;
    see [track data room activity](/guides/share-a-data-room#track-who-opened-it) for the
    full visitor log.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Investors">
    | Email       | Default | Sent when                                        |
    | ----------- | :-----: | ------------------------------------------------ |
    | New Reports | On | A portfolio company sends you an investor report |

    Investors get a single email toggle. Requests you have sent are tracked on
    the Requests page rather than pushed to you as they change state, so a firm
    running many requests at once does not get a mailbox full of status changes.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

<Tip>
  Preferences are per person, not per company. Turning off Report Deadlines
  silences it for you alone; your colleagues keep getting theirs.
</Tip>

## If email is not arriving

Check the master **Email Notifications** switch first; it overrides everything
beneath it, and it is easy to switch off while muting one specific email.

If the master switch is on and the individual toggle is on, check your spam
folder for mail from `vein.finance` and add it to your safe senders. Nothing
about a notification is destructive to miss: every notification corresponds to
something you can also find in the product, so a lost email delays you rather
than losing the event.
